A scraper API is a hosted service that fetches a web page for you and returns its content through one API call. You send the target URL. The service handles proxies, browser rendering, and anti-bot measures, then returns HTML or structured JSON. Some services also parse the page into named fields, such as a product's title and price.

Scraper APIs are typically priced per request (some, like Zyte API, only per successful response) rather than per proxy or per GB, since the provider is bundling infrastructure, anti-bot handling, and often parsing into one product. They're generally a better fit for teams that want scraped data without building and maintaining scraping infrastructure, while raw proxies remain the better fit for teams that want full control over their scraping logic.

Because the provider handles retries and failures internally, a scraper API call that fails often gets automatically retried with a different proxy or browser configuration before the customer ever sees an error, trading some transparency for reliability.

How a Scraper API Request Works

  • Request: Send the target URL and your API key to the service's endpoint, as query parameters or a JSON body.
  • Options: Parameters can turn on JavaScript rendering, pick the country the request comes from, or keep the same IP across several requests.
  • Response: The service returns the raw HTML, browser-rendered HTML, a screenshot, or extracted structured data.
  • Async jobs: For large batches, some services accept a job, return a status URL to check, and can send results to a webhook.

Scraper API vs. Official API

An official API is published by the website owner for programmatic access. It returns data in a documented format and sets explicit limits. GitHub's REST API, for example, allows 60 unauthenticated requests per hour and 5,000 per hour for an authenticated user. A scraper API instead works from pages built for human browsers. It can reach public data that no official API offers, but its output depends on the page layout and can break when that layout changes.
