A web unlocker is a managed scraping service that handles anti-bot measures for you, such as CAPTCHAs, browser fingerprints, retries and proxy selection, and returns the target page through a single endpoint. Instead of tuning headers and rotating IPs yourself, you send a request and the service works out how to get a successful response.
Some providers call the same category a "web unblocker." Services in this category can be used as a proxy endpoint, where you pass options in custom request headers, or through a REST API.
What a Web Unlocker Handles
- CAPTCHAs and challenges: The service solves CAPTCHAs and anti-bot challenges automatically.
- Headers and fingerprints: It sets request headers and browser fingerprints to match real-user traffic.
- Retries: Failed attempts are retried with different configurations until a request succeeds or the service gives up.
- Proxy selection and rotation: It picks and rotates the proxies used for each target.
- JavaScript rendering: Some services can render JavaScript on request, for example through a request header.
Web Unlocker vs. a Standard Proxy
A standard proxy forwards your request and leaves detection handling to you. A web unlocker adds the anti-bot logic on top of the proxy network. Some services charge only for requests that return a successful response.
Output and Limits
- Output: The service returns the target page, usually as raw HTML. Some services can return JSON when you set a format option.
- No browser automation: Web unlockers are not built for clicking, filling forms or driving headless browsers such as Playwright, Selenium or Puppeteer through the endpoint.
- Certificate checks: When used as a proxy endpoint, some services require the client to skip TLS certificate verification for that endpoint.
